Where a quarter's weight sits

Lilly's second-quarter revenue was 15.6 billion dollars a year ago and reached 23.0 billion dollars this time. Within that total Mounjaro contributed 9.9 billion dollars, up 91 per cent, and Zepbound 4.9 billion dollars, up 46 per cent. The company moved its full-year revenue outlook from a range of 82-85 billion dollars to a range of 85-87 billion dollars.[1]

The profit outlook moved in two directions. The full-year adjusted earnings-per-share range was 35.50-37.00 dollars and became 35.50-36.50 dollars: the floor stayed and the ceiling declined. When the revenue forecast rises while the ceiling of the profit forecast falls, the link between where the growth comes from and where the profit comes from is loosening. The company's support still rests on the same drug class: the same release announced a type 2 diabetes submission for orforglipron and positive Phase 3 data for retatrutide.[1]

The same class, a second balance sheet

A day earlier Amgen reported second-quarter revenue up 10 per cent at 10.1 billion dollars, free cash flow of 3.5 billion dollars against 1.9 billion dollars a year earlier, and full-year revenue guidance of 38.2-39.4 billion dollars. The same release said development of AMG 513 will be discontinued, leaving MariTide as the company's only advancing obesity candidate.[2]

The two companies' exposures take different forms and attach to the same place. At Lilly the class carries today's revenue; at Amgen it carries tomorrow's only candidate. If a reimbursement or pricing change touches the class, it touches a growth rate at one company and the sole remaining pipeline asset at the other in the same movement. The buffers that could stop the break are countable too: Lilly's raised revenue range and two separate regulatory advances, Amgen's free cash flow of 3.5 billion dollars and its guidance raise. An alternative deserves a place: the two exposures sit in separate regulatory and payer environments and may not respond together to one decision. The distinguishing observation is whether the outcome of the orforglipron submission lands in the same quarter as MariTide's Phase 3 timetable.[1], [2]
