A criminal investigation opens

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed for the first time that its troops fired at the car in which five-year-old Hind Rajab and six relatives died in Gaza City in 2024. The military police criminal investigation division is opening a formal inquiry into the deaths. This marks a notable shift from the initial military account, which stated that no troops were in the vicinity of the vehicle.[1]

The paramedic casualties

The investigation explicitly covers the deaths of Yusuf al-Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, two paramedics killed when their ambulance was shelled after being cleared to reach the girl. The military now asserts its troops fired because the vehicle was travelling completely contrary to advance instructions issued to local residents. The same review mechanism is examining the March 2025 killing of 15 Palestinians, including medics and a United Nations worker.[1]

Strikes on the police headquarters

As the accountability steps were announced, separate Israeli strikes hit the police headquarters in the Tuffah district of Gaza City, killing nine people and severely wounding 15 others. The dead include the city's newly appointed police chief and the director of the women's police force. The Israeli army stated it had directly targeted Hamas commanders at the site, but provided no supporting evidence for its claims.[2]
