Serbia’s governing Progressive Party proposed that President Aleksandar Vucic become prime minister if it wins an early parliamentary election. At its Nis meeting, Vucic said he would call the vote within days and resign the presidency to campaign. The previous evening, he outlined a government of no more than 12 ministers. Party proposes the move to prime minister

Serbia’s governing Progressive Party formally proposed at its Saturday meeting in Nis that President Aleksandar Vucic become prime minister if it wins the early parliamentary election. Vucic told party officials he would call the vote within days and then resign the presidency to campaign. The ballot is expected on 25 October. His preparation to take over as premier, outlined on TV Informer on Friday evening, depended on the party’s support.[1], [2]

A few days to call the election

On Friday evening, Vucic gave 10 September as the deadline for calling the election. He had previously named 18 or 25 October as possible voting dates. The party’s top body was scheduled to discuss both the election and his possible nomination for prime minister in Nis. Describing the government he intended to form, Vucic said it would have no more than 12 ministers. A presidential election would follow the parliamentary ballot.[2], [1]

Protesters march in Nis

Anti-government protesters marched in Nis while the party met. Police surrounded the National Theatre to keep demonstrators from reaching the venue. Election preparations follow anti-corruption protests that began after the collapse of a station canopy in Novi Sad on 1 November 2024, which killed 16 people. The governing party faces a student-backed list whose candidates have not yet been announced, along with right-wing and centre-left opposition parties.[1]
