Witkoff and Kushner head to Kyiv after three hours of talks with Putin

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner left roughly three hours of talks with Putin without an announced agreement. The White House said substantive plans for next steps were discussed and an announcement is expected within weeks. The envoys now head to Kyiv for their first visit. Moscow and Kyiv pledged a three-day pause in strikes on each other’s capitals, but the American proposal remains unpublished and core disagreements persist.

Moscow talks end without an announced agreement

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Putin for roughly three hours on Saturday. Al Jazeera reported that the meeting took place at the Kremlin and ended without an announced agreement. Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov called the exchange constructive and extremely frank. That is the Russian side’s assessment; because neither party has published the American proposal, the terms discussed remain unavailable to the public.[1], [2]

White House points to substantive plans for next steps

The White House said the envoys discussed substantive plans for next steps with Putin and that an announcement is expected within weeks. Ushakov said the conversation extended beyond Ukraine to economic issues and potential major Russian-American projects. Al Jazeera correspondent Yulia Shapovalova reported that Putin had not moved on the issues he treats as core and that large differences remained. Those assessments do not disclose what the substantive plans contain.[1], [2]

Kyiv becomes the envoys’ next and first stop

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are heading to Ukraine for their first Kyiv visit as Trump’s top negotiators. Zelenskyy said he was ready for a substantive conversation. Moscow and Kyiv pledged a three-day pause in strikes on each other’s capitals around the visit; the arrangement was not presented as a front-wide ceasefire. The diplomatic sequence has therefore moved from a completed Russian meeting to Ukraine’s response to the same unpublished proposal, with no agreement yet announced.[1], [2]
