The expulsion
Reuters reported that Sweden’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday it had asked an Iranian embassy official to leave over activity incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry statement did not describe the activity. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said the decision was taken to protect Swedish citizens and interests. The ministry did not give operational detail in the public text.[1], [2]
The summons
Anadolu Agency wrote that the Swedish government announced the expulsion of an official at the Iranian embassy in Sweden. It said the Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador and asked the official to leave. The step was linked to activities not compatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The expulsion was announced the same day as the ambassador’s summons.[1], [2]
SVT remarks
Anadolu Agency wrote that Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer told SVT that Iran has for a long time been conducting security-threatening activities in and against Sweden. Reuters also carried Strommer’s remark. Neither report fills in operational detail beyond the ministry’s Vienna Convention line. Strommer’s SVT remark sits as an extra layer beside the ministry notice.[1], [2]
