The ministry spoke after a 262-159 House vote

India Today reported that the External Affairs Ministry said India would keep securing energy for 1.4 billion people after the US House bill authorizing tariffs of up to 100 per cent on buyers of Russian energy. DD India, on 17 September at 13:31 IST, said the MEA noted the passage of the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act in the US Congress. The two reports are the same ministry statement, not two rival tallies of the House vote.[1], [2]

Energy for 1.4 billion is the line both carry

In the ministry statement carried by India Today, New Delhi said the issue had been raised at a high level with US interlocutors in recent months, including possible effects on bilateral ties and the international energy market. DD India quoted the MEA saying India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion people through diversified sourcing and evolving market dynamics, and that the issue has been discussed at high levels with various US interlocutors.[1], [2]

A 100 per cent tariff is not automatic

India Today noted that a 100 per cent tariff is not automatic and would require the president to use the authority, and that the House passed the bill 262 to 159 on Wednesday. DD India said the Indian side had made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests and that the government will work with Indian trade and industry bodies. Neither publisher filed a company comment from a named Indian importer.[1], [2]
