Hong Kong held a state funeral for Tung Chee-hwa

Hong Kong held only its third state funeral since 1997 for Tung Chee-hwa, its first chief executive, who died on 8 September at 89. Al Jazeera wrote that Politburo member Shi Taifeng chaired an 87-member funeral committee and that Xia Baolong attended with Chief Executive John Lee and former chief executives Leung Chun-ying, Carrie Lam and Donald Tsang. RTHK, in a 20 September 11:37 HKT report, said those officials arrived before 9 am and that a police-escorted hearse then went to Cape Collinson Crematorium.

A third state funeral since 1997

Al Jazeera wrote that the city held only its third state funeral since 1997 for Tung, who died on 8 September at 89, and that the coffin draped in China's national flag was taken to Cape Collinson Crematorium. RTHK said top Beijing and Special Administrative Region (SAR) officials paid respects the same morning and published a photograph of the police-escorted procession to that crematorium.[1], [2]

An 87-member committee

Al Jazeera, with AP, wrote that Shi Taifeng, a Communist Party Politburo member, chaired an 87-member funeral committee. Xia Baolong attended with Chief Executive John Lee and former chief executives Leung Chun-ying, Carrie Lam and Donald Tsang. Lee and Leung were among the pallbearers. Tung was the city's first leader after the 1997 handover.[1]

Arrivals before 9am

RTHK's 20 September 2026 HKT 11:37 report said Shi Taifeng, CY Leung, Wang Dongfeng, Xia Baolong and Chief Executive John Lee arrived before 9 am. Former chief executives Donald Tsang and Carrie Lam also attended. A police-escorted hearse then headed to Cape Collinson Crematorium.[2]
