G7 demands the Houthis halt strikes on Saudi Arabia and civilian ships

G7 foreign ministers condemned Houthi strikes in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia and called for an immediate end to military action, threats and attacks on civilian shipping. They also told Iran to stop arming the group. Al Jazeera and Deutsche Welle both reported the statement, issued during the UN General Assembly.

The demand

G7 foreign ministers condemned Houthi strikes in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia, and called for an immediate end to military action, threats and attacks on civilian shipping. Deutsche Welle reported the same condemnation and the same demand to halt military action and attacks on civilian ships. The statement is a ministerial call, not a resolution of the UN Security Council and not a decision to send forces.[1], [2]

Iran

Issued during the UN General Assembly, the statement called on Iran to stop arming and supporting the Houthis and asked the group to return to the political process. Deutsche Welle reported that call on Iran as well. Neither account publishes a new evidence annex on specific weapons shipments; both attribute the arming charge to the ministers' statement.[1], [2]

Trade and stability

The ministers said the escalation threatened international trade and global stability. Al Jazeera reported that line from the statement issued at the General Assembly. The wording ties the strikes to shipping and to a wider risk; it does not quantify delayed cargo or name a ceasefire date.[1]
