WHO seeks answers as Russia eases precautions after a laboratory death

Russia began easing precautions after a laboratory employee’s unexplained death, while the World Health Organization again requested information about the tests performed. The United States also sought details through its embassy. Moscow said a Putin–Trump call could be arranged promptly, but no conversation had been scheduled and the cause of death remained unresolved.

WHO renews its request

The World Health Organization asked Russia again on October 7 for details about the death of a laboratory employee in the Irkutsk region. As Moscow began reducing precautions, the organisation sought information on which tests had been performed and the diagnosis behind the illness. A definitive explanation for the death remained unavailable.[1], [2]

The employee, Darya Shipilova, died on October 2 at the age of 28. Russian authorities described her illness as pneumonia of unknown origin. WHO also requested verification of information suggesting that another employee had pneumonia; a second infection had not been established.[1]

Washington seeks information through its embassy

The US Embassy in Moscow contacted Russian authorities seeking additional information. Trump said he expected to speak to Putin about the death. Russia said it could arrange a call promptly, while stating that no conversation had been scheduled.[1]

Russian agency eases precautions

Russia’s health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said monitoring had ended for 90 percent of contacts and nearly 5,000 laboratory tests found no dangerous pathogens. These were the agency’s findings. WHO continued requesting information on the testing as precautions were eased in the Irkutsk region.[1], [2]
