Himes and Raskin ask Patel to cancel his reported Russia trip

US House Democrats Jim Himes and Jamie Raskin asked FBI Director Kash Patel to cancel his reported Russia visit, citing counterintelligence risks. They also sought a closed-door briefing about the proposed itinerary, meetings, travelling party and safeguards. Their public request brings congressional scrutiny to the reported plans; it does not announce an FBI decision to cancel the visit or a completed trip.

Two House Democrats seek cancellation

Jim Himes and Jamie Raskin asked Kash Patel, director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, to cancel his reported visit to Russia. The request was made public on October 9. Himes is the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee; Raskin holds that position on the Judiciary Committee. They also requested a closed-door congressional briefing about the plans. Their intervention is a request for cancellation and information from the FBI, rather than an order prohibiting travel.[1], [2]

The plans cited in their announcement concern Moscow and St. Petersburg, with Russia’s Federal Security Service reportedly hosting Patel. The Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, is the Russian security and intelligence agency at the centre of their objections. The itinerary remains reported information rather than an officially announced FBI programme.[1]

Lawmakers raise counterintelligence concerns

Himes and Raskin cited the FSB’s history of espionage and surveillance targeting American officials. They argued that the proposed visit would create risks to sensitive information. They also questioned reports of closer FBI relations with Russian and Chinese law-enforcement bodies, including personnel exchanges and intelligence sharing. These objections are the lawmakers’ allegations and assessments; the announcement does not establish that Patel disclosed classified information or that a security breach occurred.[1]

The two Democrats questioned the timing while Washington was imposing new sanctions aimed at Russia’s war against Ukraine. Their stated grounds also included Russian cyber operations, allegations of election interference and reports of Russian intelligence support for Iranian attacks involving US personnel. They presented those issues as reasons for opposing the proposed visit.[1]

Committees seek itinerary and security safeguards

If Patel proceeds, the committees want a private briefing covering who proposed the trip, its purpose and full itinerary. The requested information includes planned meetings and everyone travelling with him. Himes and Raskin also sought details about secure communications and other counterintelligence safeguards. They asked the FBI to disclose internal objections to cooperation with Russia, China and other foreign entities. No FBI cancellation decision is announced in the public request.[1]
