Trump opens US and global markets to Russian diesel

After a call with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump announced Russian diesel supplies for US and global markets, with deliveries planned across the coming months. The Kremlin welcomed energy cooperation. The announcement comes before the US congressional elections, as diesel costs affect transport, farming and heating; shipment quantities remain the president’s announced plans rather than completed deliveries.

Diesel agreement follows a Putin call

US President Donald Trump announced Russian diesel supplies for American and global markets after speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 9. The deliveries described by Trump extend across the coming months.[1], [2]

Trump specified more than three hundred thousand tonnes immediately, five hundred thousand tonnes in November and one million tonnes immediately afterwards. He also mentioned an additional three million tonnes over a short period. These are announced plans; completed shipments, ultimate buyers and all contract terms remain unconfirmed.[1]

Russia welcomes renewed energy cooperation

Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriyev welcomed energy cooperation. The Kremlin said Russia was ready to supply oil and petroleum products to international markets, including the United States. Its account of the leaders’ conversation also covered large economic initiatives.[1]

Fuel measures precede congressional elections

Diesel powers goods transport and farm equipment and is used for home heating. The announcement came before the November 3 US congressional elections. Trump had already widened access to tax-exempt red-dyed diesel normally used in agriculture.[1]

A week earlier, G7 countries had agreed to release 100 million barrels from reserves following White House pressure. That reserve release formed part of the fuel-supply measures preceding the new Russian diesel announcement.[1]
