Bulgaria requests NATO aircraft and air defence reinforcement

Bulgaria has formally requested combat aircraft, air defence missiles, counter-drone systems and patrol aviation from NATO allies. Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said the country was awaiting the alliance’s decision. The request follows attacks on Black Sea merchant shipping, while allied resources are also sought by Romania and the Baltic states. No deployment timetable was announced.

A formal request for allied capabilities

Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said Bulgaria had sent a formal request for additional defence capabilities to NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The request covers combat aircraft, surface-to-air missile systems, counter-drone equipment and patrol aviation. Stoyanov described the request on Friday, with the alliance’s response still awaited. Specific assistance had not yet been confirmed. Bulgaria sought a broad range of capabilities rather than announcing an agreed deployment.[1], [2]

Black Sea attacks drive Sofia’s appeal

Stoyanov said attacks in the Black Sea were intensifying and described strikes in Romanian territorial waters the previous day. Four merchant vessels had been hit in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in recent days and two in Romanian waters. Bulgaria had not formally identified who carried out the attacks. Prime Minister Rumen Radev argued that they served Russian interests, while the government said it was seeking solid evidence of Russian responsibility.[1]

Romania and Baltic states also seek support

The request was addressed to NATO’s secretary general and Allied Command. Stoyanov said allied resources were limited and that Romania and the Baltic states also needed extra capabilities. He described attention shifting from the Baltic region toward the Black Sea over the preceding week. The minister called for modernisation of Bulgaria’s armed forces and closer coordination among countries in the region. The allocation of allied equipment and forces remained unsettled, with no confirmed delivery or deployment schedule for the Bulgarian request.[1]
