Milei and his sister cleared in Argentina’s Libra criminal case

An Argentine federal judge dismissed the Libra cryptocurrency proceedings against President Javier Milei and his sister Karina at a prosecutor’s request. The decision follows allegations surrounding a token that surged after Milei shared it and then collapsed. The judge found no criminally relevant deception; no investor compensation decision accompanied the dismissal.

Criminal proceedings against the Mileis end

An Argentine court dismissed the Libra cryptocurrency proceedings against President Javier Milei and his sister Karina. The decision closes the criminal case against the siblings over allegations surrounding the token’s launch.[1], [2]

Federal judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi acted on 23 October at prosecutor Eduardo Taiano’s request. His reasoning found that the events did not fit a criminal category and that criminally relevant deception had not been established.[1]

A presidential post preceded the token’s collapse

Milei shared a link to Libra on X in February 2025, saying it could help finance small businesses and start-ups. Its price surged after the post. He deleted the message within hours and the token collapsed. Opposition politicians accused Milei of wrongdoing amid investor losses, and impeachment was discussed. Milei said he had shared information rather than promoted the project.[1]

Milei had denied developing the project

The president’s office denied his involvement in Libra’s development. The secretariat headed by Karina Milei also told prosecutors it held no administrative documentation of a confidential agreement with the token’s creator, Hayden Mark Davis. Milei previously said he acted in good faith and that investors understood the risks. No repayment or compensation decision accompanied the dismissal.[1]
