Vasile Tofan brings Moldova’s government delegation to Kyiv

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv with infrastructure, defence and energy ministers. His announced programme includes talks with Ukraine’s political leadership and participation in an economic forum. Bilateral trade, investment, regional security and the two countries’ European path are on the agenda; a gas purchase remains an earlier possibility rather than an agreed contract.

Tofan arrives with three ministers

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, on a working visit announced by his government on 26 October. He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatii and Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu.[1], [2]

Leadership talks and an economic forum are planned

The announced programme includes a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretsky on bilateral relations, economic and trade cooperation, regional security and the two countries’ European path. Tofan is also scheduled to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky and parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.[1]

The two prime ministers are due to participate in an international economic forum in Kyiv devoted to investment opportunities and economic cooperation. Discussions with business representatives are also planned, covering economic partnerships and the expansion of trade between Moldova and Ukraine.[1]

Gas purchases remain under consideration

Ahead of the visit, Tofan had said Moldova was considering buying gas from Ukraine. In his account, Ukraine would sell at market prices; negotiating purchases over a longer period might allow a lower price. A one-off purchase for immediate needs would require paying the market price or close to it. These were earlier statements about a possible arrangement, rather than a concluded supply contract.[1]
