UN extends Libya mission for another year

The United Nations Security Council extended its support mission in Libya for another year. Britain said resolution 2835 supports envoy Hanna Tetteh’s political roadmap, including efforts towards a single executive authority and reunified institutions. The British statement also described an objective of inclusive elections within 24 months, rather than announcing a polling day.

A further year for UNSMIL

The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2835 on October 30, extending the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, known as UNSMIL, for 12 months.[1], [2]

The mission supports the country’s political process. Britain’s UN representative Sarah MacIntosh welcomed the decision, describing it as backing for the roadmap led by Hanna Tetteh, the UN envoy working with Libyan parties.[1]

Britain points to elections and a single executive

MacIntosh urged the parties to fulfil commitments made through the Smaller Convening, a political consultation process in Libya. According to Britain’s explanation of vote, those commitments aim to advance free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections within 24 months. This is a political objective rather than an agreed polling date. She also said the resolution gives the mission a basis to help Libyan parties establish a single executive authority.[1]

Reunification and women’s participation

The British representative said institutional reunification should include judicial, military and security bodies, and urged political actors not to obstruct the work. She highlighted the mission’s human-rights and rule-of-law activities, alongside support for women’s full, equal, meaningful and safe participation in politics. Britain reiterated its support for Tetteh and called on Libyan parties to honour their commitments concerning democratic choice, economic opportunity and security.[1]
