India hosts the five-day exercise
India’s Andaman and Nicobar Command announced the inaugural maritime security exercise of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Scheduled for October 30–November 3 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it brings together Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Indian Navy welcomed Sri Lankan ship SLNS Gajabahu and Myanmar’s UMS King Aung Zeya at Sri Vijaya Puram on October 31.[1], [2]
Organizers seek closer maritime coordination
The organizers’ stated aims include improving forces’ ability to work together, strengthening awareness of activity at sea and refining coordination procedures. Members are also expected to share experience and practices for responding to transnational maritime threats. The exercise follows cooperation priorities from the sixth BIMSTEC summit, which emphasized prosperity, resilience and openness.[1]
Bay of Bengal links South and Southeast Asia
The Bay of Bengal carries trade and energy connections between South and Southeast Asia. The host command integrates India’s army, navy and air force. Its responsibilities include maritime surveillance, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The islands provide the setting for the announced regional cooperation programme.[1]
