Moldova reopens airspace after reported drone incursion

Moldova’s defence ministry reported an unauthorized drone flight on October 31 and temporarily restricted northern and central airspace before reopening it. Officials placed the incursion amid Russian attacks on Ukraine and later announced a second flight. The reported routes and detections remain attributed to Moldovan authorities, which continued monitoring with relevant partners.

Northern and central airspace reopen

Moldova’s Ministry of Defence reported an unauthorized drone flight on October 31 and temporarily restricted northern and central airspace for security reasons. The ministry subsequently said the aircraft had left and the two areas had reopened after a security reassessment. The National Army’s Air Operations Centre continued monitoring in coordination with relevant authorities and partners.[1], [2]

Officials trace the flight from Ukraine

According to the ministry, the first aircraft approached from Ukraine’s Odesa region toward Plopi in Moldova’s Transnistrian segment, was later located near Bănești and disappeared from radar near Țibirica. Officials separately announced a second entry from Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region toward Soroca district. They said that aircraft passed through northern Moldova before leaving near Viișoara. The ministry placed the incidents amid Russian attacks on Ukraine; aircraft identities and operators were not independently verified.[1]

Ministry warns residents away from suspicious debris

The ministry warned residents not to approach, touch or move suspicious aircraft or fragments because they could contain explosive components. It advised noting their location, moving at least 500 metres away and calling the 112 emergency service from safety. Residents were also told to avoid using mobile phones near suspicious objects.[1]
