Ministry seeks contact with Washington

Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities offered practical engagement with the United States on Monday after reports of plans to deport Afghan nationals through Pakistan. Their foreign ministry expressed concern about the reported arrangements and urged Washington to coordinate decisions affecting Afghan citizens. The statement called for a responsible approach to the people concerned.[1], [2]

Rights and dignity in return decisions

The ministry said the rights and human dignity of Afghans should be respected wherever they live. It asked for decisions to rest on clear bilateral understanding and necessary coordination, with the legitimate concerns of both sides taken into account. It described itself as ready for constructive cooperation over returns that are safe, voluntary and dignified. Those assurances are the Taliban authorities’ stated position on return.[1]

A further passage warned third countries against trading Afghan citizens’ fate for temporary, limited advantages. The ministry named no particular country in that part of the statement.[1]

Offer made without formal diplomatic ties

Washington and the Taliban authorities have no formal diplomatic relations. The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Monday’s offer concerns contact about the reported removal plans, while the statement provides no confirmation that a flight has left or that a new readmission agreement has taken effect.[1]
