Water projects remain a government priority
Jordan’s King Abdullah addressed parliament on Monday, setting out security concerns and instructions concerning the country’s water resources. The address also appealed for national unity after the attack in Karak, a city in southern Jordan.[1], [2]
Abdullah described water security as a foundation of national sovereignty. He instructed the government to develop preventive plans to protect resources while pressing ahead with water projects. He also called for faster progress on major strategic projects.[1]
King calls for unity after Karak
The king asked lawmakers to observe silence for those killed in Karak. He emphasised the army’s and security agencies’ responsibility to defend Jordan and called on the public to support national unity. His opening address inaugurated the third ordinary session of the 20th Parliament, with oversight of government and the public interest among his messages to lawmakers.[1]
Palestinian rights in the regional message
On regional affairs, Abdullah said lasting security required respect for Palestinians’ right to their homeland. He referred to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem, describing Israel’s expansionist ambitions as the greatest threat to the region’s future. These were the king’s political assessments in the parliamentary address. He urged lawmakers to put Jordan’s interests above their disagreements.[1]
