US officials describe a defensive operation

American forces carried out limited airstrikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island late on 2 November, according to US officials. Two officials told ABC News that strikes had taken place; one described a response to Iranian fire at American aircraft. The officials characterised the action as defensive and sought to distinguish it from a return to major combat operations.[1], [2]

Explosions reported near the Strait of Hormuz

Qeshm lies off Iran’s southern coast near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s state news agency IRNA cited witnesses who heard repeated explosions and saw two aircraft above the island. The Iranian Fars agency reported sounds of explosions from the sea near Bandar Lengeh. Targets, damage and casualties had not been independently verified when these accounts appeared. US Central Command had not immediately answered ABC News’s request for comment.[1]

Washington and Tehran discuss possible talks

Earlier that day, Donald Trump said he was not considering new attacks after the US elections and expressed hope for an agreement with Iran. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran had put forward an accelerated plan tied to ending the US blockade and hostilities. US Vice-President JD Vance had also spoken positively about contacts with Iranian officials. Neither government announced a completed agreement.[1]
