Industrial fires follow the attack

Fires at industrial facilities and damage to power lines followed an overnight drone attack in Russia’s Ryazan region on November 5. Governor Pavel Malkov said falling debris started the fires. Electricity was cut in parts of the city, and windows were shattered at a school. The attack came during the war between Russia and Ukraine, as both countries continued striking infrastructure inside each other’s territory.[1], [2]

Ryazan lies about 200 kilometres southeast of Moscow. Malkov did not identify the affected industrial facilities in his initial account of the attack. Classes at the school whose windows were shattered were cancelled. The damage to power lines affected parts of the city.[1]

Footage identifies a refinery fire

Astra, an independent Russian news outlet, verified footage showing a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery, which is owned by Russian oil company Rosneft. The extent of damage to the refinery and any resulting loss of production had not been independently established.[1]

Electricity restored after damage to lines

Malkov subsequently said that electricity had been restored and the fires had been extinguished or contained. He gave no detailed assessment of the refinery’s operating status. Russian officials’ statements about the number of drones involved had not been independently verified.[1]
