North Macedonia’s reported West Nile death toll this season reached eight after a 70-year-old man with several underlying illnesses died. The country’s case count rose to 58; all eight people who died were men aged 62 to 83 with other health conditions. The eighth death was reported in Skopje’s Dracevo area

North Macedonia’s health minister, Sasko Klekovski, confirmed that a 70-year-old man from the Dracevo area of Skopje had died from West Nile fever. METLA reports that the patient had several underlying health conditions. His death brought the country’s reported toll for the current season to eight. The report also says the Institute of Public Health continues to examine new suspected cases, so the season’s total is not yet final.[1]

The reported case count reached 58

The Daily Tribune reports that North Macedonia’s case count has risen to 58. All eight people who died were men aged between 62 and 83 who also had other health conditions. METLA’s earlier count recorded 56 confirmed cases through September 1. The figures refer to different cut-off points: 56 covers confirmations through September 1, while 58 is the season total reported in the later coverage.[1], [2]

This season’s count surpassed the previous 15-year total

METLA reports that the 56 cases confirmed through September 1 exceeded the 54 recorded during the entire 2011-2025 period. Five deaths were recorded over those 15 years. The Daily Tribune also reports that the European Union’s health agency has counted more than 1,000 locally acquired cases across 15 European countries this year. These comparisons place reported totals from different geographic scopes and time periods side by side.[1], [2]
