UK Biobank begins a phased reopening after five months offline

UK Biobank is preparing to reopen the research platform in phases after keeping it offline for about five months following a data leak. Nature and the biobank's security page say health-data downloads will initially remain disabled, results files will undergo manual checks and automated output monitoring will follow later.

Researchers return to the data

UK Biobank's research platform was closed after an alert in mid-April that data apparently belonging to hundreds of thousands of participants had been offered for sale online. Nature reports that access is planned to resume during September after nearly five months offline, and the biobank's own security page confirms a phased reopening. Because the resource contains genetic data, medical images, health histories and lifestyle information from 500,000 participants, the closure affected many active research projects.[1], [2]

Downloads stay closed at first

Reopening does not mean returning to the old access model. UK Biobank says researchers will initially work inside the secure online environment without the ability to download health data. Limited downloads of results files will follow, subject first to manual review. The organization also plans to condition access on institutional confirmation that previously downloaded data have been deleted and to strengthen monitoring for files that appear outside the platform. These measures reopen analysis while narrowing the routes through which data can be copied.[2]

Automated checking is not ready yet

The organization aims to deploy an automated system that checks results files and prevents participant data from leaving the platform. Its security page says the first elements are intended for late 2026, so the initial manual review is not the permanent scale model. Nearly 5,000 researchers use the platform each month, and UK Biobank estimates that checking every file manually would require about 80 full-time staff. The phased reopening restores access, but the effectiveness of automation remains uncertain until independent review is complete.[2]
