JWST brought IC 348 brown-dwarf masses down to twice Jupiter

NASA Science said JWST brought IC 348 brown-dwarf masses down to twice Jupiter, or 0.19 percent of solar mass. NIRCam ran in 2024, NIRSpec in 2025. Distance is about 1,000 light-years. No second news page appeared in this pass. A hydrocarbon signature remains unnamed.

The IC 348 panorama

NASA Science on 15 September 2026 posted JWST’s look at the IC 348 field inside Perseus. Distance is about 1,000 light-years. Instruments ran NIRCam in 2024 and NIRSpec in 2025. The frame is wide. The date is 15 September 2026. The telescope is JWST. The field code is IC 348.[1]

Twice Jupiter

Spectra brought brown-dwarf masses down to twice Jupiter, equal to 0.19 percent of solar mass. That sits below the 3-4 Jupiter-mass objects the same group saw here in 2022. NASA wrote the masses sit below star-formation model predictions. The faintest objects also showed a hydrocarbon signature still unnamed. The measurement follows the 2024-2025 instrument order.[1]

No second page

BBC World RSS and France 24 English RSS carried no IC 348 brown-dwarf headline on 16 September. The card therefore rests on the NASA Science note. Twice Jupiter, 0.19 percent and 1,000 light-years come from that note. The RSS sweep is dated 16 September. There is no second publisher. NIRCam and NIRSpec years are 2024 and 2025. The JWST frame is wide-field. The field sits in Perseus.[1]
