Fleetwood eliminate Arsenal and reach their first League Cup quarterfinal

Jay Lynch stopped Bruno Guimarães in the shootout before Conor Haughey sealed Fleetwood’s victory over the reigning English champions. The fourth-tier club advanced after a 1-1 draw, despite Arsenal recovering from an early deficit. Fleetwood’s cup breakthrough came during a difficult league run, with a quarterfinal opponent still to be drawn.

Lynch and Haughey settle the shootout

Fleetwood Town, the Lancashire club playing in England’s fourth tier, reached the League Cup quarterfinals for the first time by eliminating Arsenal. The tie at Highbury Stadium on 27 October ended 1-1 before Fleetwood won the shootout 5-3. All five home penalties went in, while Arsenal’s fourth attempt was saved.[1], [2]

Goalkeeper Jay Lynch dived left to stop Bruno Guimarães, leaving the hosts ahead 4-3. Conor Haughey then sent Illan Meslier the wrong way with the decisive kick. Fleetwood supporters entered the pitch after the winning penalty. Lynch had already helped keep the tie level with saves from Ben White and Martin Ødegaard during the match.[1], [2]

Arsenal equalise but lose Dowman

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood the lead in the 21st minute after getting away from defender Marli Salmon and beating Meslier from a narrow angle. Arsenal recovered after half-time: Viktor Gyökeres finished from close range following a delivery by senior debutant Ceadach O’Neill, who had controlled Piero Hincapie’s long pass.[1], [2]

Arsenal finished with 10 players after teenager Max Dowman was dismissed following an incident involving Harrison Neal. Fleetwood resisted the visitors’ late pressure. Earlier, a drone above the stadium had interrupted play for more than eight minutes. The stoppage came before the goals and the later dismissal that changed Arsenal’s numbers.[1], [2]

Cup breakthrough amid a difficult league run

Fleetwood entered the game in the bottom half of League Two with only one victory from their previous eight league matches. Arsenal, by contrast, had won seven of their first eight Premier League fixtures and remained unbeaten in the Champions League. Manager Matt Lawlor described the night as the club’s biggest in terms of visiting opposition.[1], [2]

Left-back Jake Batty hoped for another home draw and said Fleetwood should approach the next round without fear. Their quarterfinal opponents are to be determined after Wednesday’s remaining fourth-round games. Lawlor also reminded his players that the celebrations precede a return to league action against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.[1], [2]
