Punter closes out a tight finish
Barcelona beat Bayern Munich 88-84 away on Tuesday in the EuroLeague, Europe’s leading men’s club basketball competition. Kevin Punter led Barcelona with 23 points as the visitors recorded their fifth victory in eight games. Bayern had led by a point at half-time and later closed to within one again, but Barcelona held the lead through the final exchanges in Munich.[1], [2]
Punter’s shooting and late free throws helped Barcelona finish the job. Juan Núñez contributed to controlling the pace after entering the game, and Bayern could not convert a late chance at the line. The hosts had pulled back to 78-79 before the visitors completed the win. Punter’s scoring total was his highest of October and his second-best of the season.[1]
Bayern recover from an early eight-point deficit
Barcelona moved ahead 13-21 in the opening quarter with contributions from Tyrese Martin and Umoja Gibson. The quarter ended 17-21. Bayern then responded through Miles Norris and Andi Obst, while Duane Washington added a basket and a free throw near the interval. The home side scored 25 points in the second quarter to take a 42-41 half-time lead.[1], [2]
The visitors went into the final quarter ahead 64-61 after another close period. Barcelona had lost Gibson to a knock on the knee, and he did not play in the second half. The team was also missing Joel Parra through illness and Yoan Makoundou through injury. Justin Robinson’s fifth personal foul with four minutes remaining further reduced Barcelona’s options in the closing stages.[1], [2]
Nebo and Martin support the leading scorer
Josh Nebo and Martin scored 12 points each for Barcelona, while Robinson finished with 11 and Balcerowski added nine. Nebo also took nine rebounds. For Bayern, Norris and Jokubaitis each scored 17, Obst supplied 14 and Wiley had ten. Barcelona’s win left Bayern still seeking a first EuroLeague home victory this season.[1], [2]
Barcelona are scheduled to host Valencia Basket at the Palau Blaugrana on October 30 in their next EuroLeague fixture. The Munich win came despite turnovers that had allowed Bayern to recover during the first half. Punter’s late contribution followed an evening in which neither side had established a lasting advantage through the middle quarters.[1], [2]
