Every team gets four group opponents
Concacaf, the governing body for football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, has redesigned the group stage of the 2027 Gold Cup. The men’s national-team competition retains 16 participants but replaces four groups of four with two groups of eight. Each team will play four different opponents, increasing its group-stage programme from three matches under the previous format. A group member will therefore face four of its seven possible opponents rather than playing every other team in its table.[1], [2]
Concacaf president Victor Montagliani said the change is intended to create earlier meetings between leading teams. Before the draw, the national-team rankings will divide the entrants into eight pots of two. One team from every pot will be assigned to each group. Teams will then be placed in four ranking bands within their completed group.[1]
