Withdrawal sends Mamoré into the final
Uberlândia have withdrawn from the second leg of their semifinal against Mamoré in the under-20 championship in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state. The decision on Wednesday put Mamoré into the final. Uberlândia cited the shortage of eligible opposition players following Sunday’s first-leg brawl and the resulting dismissals. Mamoré had won that opening game 3–1 before the return fixture was forfeited.[1]
The referee listed 53 dismissals
Referee Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto’s report listed 53 red cards after the confrontation: 43 for players, eight for coaching staff and two for Uberlândia officials. The sanctions reached beyond the players on the pitch. The referee said security conditions stopped him approaching each person to display a card. The total therefore includes dismissals entered in his report after the disorder.[1], [2]
The first leg had already been interrupted
An earlier dismissal in the first leg prompted people to enter the playing area, stopping the game for about 40 minutes. Play resumed and Mamoré scored in added time. Accounts attributed to Brazilian media linked a goal celebration to the confrontation that followed. Reuters also cited Guinness’s earlier example from a Claypole–Victoriano Arenas game in Argentina, when 36 people were sent off.[1]
