From 3 points to 1
In the closing encounter of the mixed team epee final in São Paulo, Hugo Alderete scored 6 points. That passage secured Argentina’s first Americas team gold. Across from him was Jovane Guissone, the Rio 2016 Paralympic silver medallist. The result built with Carlos Freitas, Karen Castillo and Dariana Janeth Fereira was completed in this last encounter. The new mixed format has a 20-point target, compared with the traditional team target of 45. Alderete’s 6 points therefore carry particular weight in reading this final.[1]
The teams did not reach that moment through an uninterrupted Argentine advantage. Fereira and Freitas started well against Monica Santos and Lenilson De Oliveira. Halfway through the match, the gap was 3 points. Rayssa Veras brought Brazil within 1 during her encounter with Castillo. That narrowing matters before the closing matchup: Argentina did not simply preserve the distance established at the start. Brazil’s response created a score from which the result remained open, and Alderete’s contribution followed that change.[1]
Within a target of 20, a contribution of 6 occupies a larger share than it does against a target of 45. This comparison makes the closing encounter’s place in the team total visible. The account of the final contains two distinct movements: Veras narrowed the gap, then Alderete produced the points that secured gold. The team title includes both the opening contribution and the last encounter. Without a version of the same final played to 45, comparing winners under the two formats is impossible. The available result belongs to Argentina’s team reaching the 20-point target.[1]
Foil’s separate calculation
The mixed team foil final at the same championships produced a different result. Brazil, with Kevin Damasceno and Fabiana Soares alongside Guissone and Santos, beat Colombia 20-14. Colombia had reached the final by defeating the United States. The hosts lost to Argentina in epee and won gold in foil. Combining the medals into one ranking of team superiority would conceal the separate contests. The foil score of 20-14 describes that final’s finishing margin; it does not explain the epee gap that narrowed from 3 to 1.[1]
According to the international federation, mixed team epee and foil are due to make their Paralympic debuts at LA 2028, both with a 20-point target. São Paulo supplies two distinct examples of that structure in different weapons. Argentina’s first team gold was completed by a closing contribution built on the quartet’s opening work. Brazil’s foil title rests on the separate 20-14 result of its own final. Reading the medals accurately starts with identifying the weapon, the stage of the contest and the target against which the points are counted.[1]
