The margin for gold
The distance between Jiang Ranxin’s 242.4 points and Yao Qianxun’s 242.1 is 0.3. That margin decided the world title in Doha’s women’s 10 metre air pistol final. The two Chinese athletes occupied the leading positions, with Hungary’s Veronika Major taking bronze on 222.1. Jiang’s closest opponent for the medal was therefore a teammate representing the same country. Moving from medals to Olympic quotas changes the comparison: the first three lines of the final standings do not identify all three countries that earned places.[1]
The ISSF identified Jiang, Major and Iran’s Haniyeh Rostamiyan as the quota-winning athletes. China, Hungary and Iran consequently secured one place each for their National Olympic Committees at Los Angeles. Yao’s silver remains second in the medal standings; Jiang supplies China’s entry in the quota list. China has two athletes in the leading positions and one Olympic place from this event. Individual placings in the final and the participation places secured for national committees have different distributions.[1]
What fourth place delivered
Rostamiyan finished fourth with 201.2 points. Major held the bronze-medal position, while the result securing Iran’s quota came immediately behind her. Assessing Rostamiyan solely by her distance from the podium would leave Iran’s Olympic place out of the calculation. In the same final, Yao’s silver and Rostamiyan’s fourth place carried different gains: Yao won a medal, while Rostamiyan secured a quota for her country. A comparison confined to the medal table would conceal the distribution that matters to the National Olympic Committees.[1]
The quota places were awarded to the National Olympic Committees of China, Hungary and Iran. The gains secured by Jiang, Major and Rostamiyan in Doha therefore belong to their national committees. The measures are concrete: Jiang is world champion on 242.4 points; China and Hungary won medals; Iran joins those countries among the recipients of Olympic places. The distinctive feature of this final is that distribution. The 0.3 points deciding gold, the bronze behind the two Chinese athletes, and the quota attached to a fourth-place finish mark different thresholds within the same competition.[1]
