Anthropic signed a lease on a 32 billion dollar Queensland campus

ABC News said Anthropic signed to use part of a proposed 32 billion dollar Western Downs data centre, subject to Foreign Investment Review Board approval, with use aimed at 2027. Brisbane Times described the same Dalby-area project as Anthropic’s first Australian deal and said the company would take the entire capacity of the proposed AI factory.

Lease and board approval

ABC News said Anthropic signed an agreement to use part of a proposed data centre on Queensland’s Western Downs, a project put at about 32 billion dollars. It said the campus is planned as Australia’s largest and could draw as much power as about 1.5 million average households. The lease is subject to Foreign Investment Review Board approval. Anthropic aims to start using the site in 2027. ABC said it understands the site would serve Claude answers to user questions rather than training.[1]

Dalby and Zerra DC

Brisbane Times reported Anthropic’s first Australian data-centre deal: a proposed 32 billion dollar Queensland development at Western Downs Digital Park near Dalby, about 250 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. It said Anthropic, led by Dario Amodei, will take the entire capacity of the Singapore-owned Zerra DC AI factory through a long-term lease. It said the site would connect through the high-voltage grid at Braemar.[2]

Share and inference

ABC described the lease as covering part of the proposed campus. Brisbane Times said Anthropic would take the entire capacity of the park. Both accounts name a 32 billion dollar Queensland plan as Anthropic’s first Australian deal. ABC recorded inference use, not training; Brisbane Times put the capacity share wider. Foreign-investment approval sits in the ABC account.[1], [2]
