Apple may sell M8 Ultra AI servers, perhaps in 2029

9to5Mac, citing The Information, says Apple is considering two-chip and four-chip M8 Ultra enterprise servers for outside AI customers, not only internal use, with a possible 2029 sale date that can still be cancelled. MacRumors adds that the line would return Apple to servers after Xserve ended in 2011 and that NVLink Fusion is one way discussed to link the chips.

Two box sizes, sale not expected before 2029

Ben Lovejoy, 16 September 2026, recaps The Information: Apple is working on enterprise servers powered by M8 Ultra chips and plans to offer the AI-focused machines for sale, not only use them internally. Two versions are said to be in development, a smaller box with two M8 Ultra chips and a bigger one with four. Apple has considered Nvidia NVLink Fusion switches, chiplets and software to let the chips talk in a data centre. Plans are not finalized; servers are not expected on sale until 2029 and could be cancelled. Work has run about a year, with CEO John Ternus in favour.[1]

A return to selling servers after Xserve

MacRumors says The Information reports Apple considering an AI server around M8-series chips, sold to outside customers, potentially bringing Apple back to a business it left when it discontinued Xserve in 2011. The target is firms that want to run AI models on their own equipment, especially inference. NVLink Fusion is one option to link M8 processors; neither that Nvidia arrangement nor the server is finalized. A 2029 date could slip or die. John Ternus backed the work about a year ago as hardware engineering chief. Apple already builds Private Cloud Compute servers and has declined partners who asked to use those boxes.[2]

Both accounts rest on the same unfinished 2029 plan

9to5Mac and MacRumors both relay The Information on customer-facing M8 Ultra servers, NVLink Fusion as a clustering option, Ternus support and a cancellable 2029 horizon. MacRumors adds the Xserve 2011 break; Lovejoy spells out the two-chip and four-chip boxes.[1], [2]
