Copilot members can now ask for more budget when credits run out

GitHub’s 16 September changelog says Copilot budget increase requests are generally available for Business and Enterprise usage-based billing. Startupik, dated 17 September, says that since 16 September 2026 a member who hits the limit can request more budget in the product, and an owner or billing manager can approve a new amount so access returns immediately.

A request when credits hit zero

GitHub says that previously, when a member used all Copilot AI credits available to them, they were blocked from Copilot features that consume credits. This release adds a flow for them to request more budget the moment they hit the limit. Organization owners, enterprise owners or billing managers can approve, adjust or deny without leaving settings. Startupik writes that since 16 September 2026 a member who hits their limit can request more budget in the product, and that an organization owner, enterprise owner or billing manager can approve a new amount with access restored immediately.[1], [2]

Who pays, and who sees the queue?

GitHub says requests automatically route to whichever account pays for the budget. Requests against an organization-owned budget appear in organization settings; requests against an enterprise-owned budget appear in enterprise settings. Reviewers use Requests from members, set a new amount, and select Approve and increase. Startupik’s 17 September guide repeats that owners or billing managers approve a new amount and access returns immediately, without adding a different routing rule.[1], [2]

Plans, and what this is not

GitHub says the feature is available with Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise under usage-based billing. Startupik separately lists Business at 19 dollars per seat per month with 1,900 AI credits and Enterprise at 39 dollars with 3,900, one credit equal to 0.01 dollars. Those seat prices are Startupik’s; the GitHub changelog used here does not print 19 or 39. Startupik also cites a 28 August changelog on seats paid upfront from 1 October; that is a later billing change, not the 16 September request flow.[1], [2]
