Cloudflare’s gateway asks agents to pay before access

Cloudflare put its Monetization Gateway into closed beta. Websites and online tools can return a price when an agent requests a resource, then deliver it after payment. Sellers choose the requests they charge for. The system uses dollar-linked USDC payments and starts with eligible buyers and sellers in the United States.

Closed beta brings payment to agent requests

Cloudflare opened its agent payment gateway in closed beta for eligible US buyers and sellers.[1], [2]

Monetization Gateway lets a seller charge for selected requests to a website, an application programming interface, a tool or a dataset. The seller defines which requests require payment and the price. The announcement follows a plan introduced three months earlier; Cloudflare says four customer uses are already in production.[1]

HTTP 402 carries the payment instructions

When a resource requires payment, the gateway returns HTTP 402 with instructions. The buyer signs a payment authorization and receives the resource after settlement. The process does not require a separate checkout page. Rules can vary with the URL, request header or query parameter. Cloudflare handles verification, failed transactions and retries.[1]

USDC payments settle on Base

The implementation uses Coinbase’s x402 payment facilitator. Transactions settle on the Base blockchain in USDC, a stablecoin linked to the US dollar. Cloudflare describes its AI Gateway, which provides access to models, as one live example of paying for an inference request. Ceramic.ai’s search API is another production example named by the company.[1]
