TikTok brings shopping questions and checkout into its feed
TikTok has introduced a shopping assistant that handles product questions in conversation, alongside Buy Direct checkout from brands inside the app. The announcement extends shopping beyond the existing TikTok Shop area. TikTok describes help with shipping, sizing and stock, while commerce and payment partners support the purchasing step. The new assistant’s ability to remember needs remains the company’s product claim.

Shopping Assistant handles the questions before a purchase
TikTok, the video-sharing platform, announced a conversational shopping assistant on October 5 at Advertising Week New York. Shopping Assistant is designed to answer questions about a product inside the application. Shipping, clothing sizes, available stock and product details are among the subjects it handles. The announcement brings conversation into the shopping process rather than leaving users to look for each answer in a separate product listing.[1], [2]
TikTok says the assistant can follow conversational context and remember a shopper’s needs. These functions are described by the company; the announcement supplies no independent measurement of how they change purchasing behavior. Purchasing itself is listed as a supported step, extending the assistant’s role beyond answering an isolated product question.[1], [2]
Buy Direct keeps brand purchases within the For You interface
A companion feature called Buy Direct provides checkout for brands within TikTok. Users are intended to complete a purchase from the For You interface without switching out of the application. The company is developing the shopping and payment experiences with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. These are commerce and payment partners in the announced arrangement. The assistant addresses information needs, while Buy Direct supplies the payment route after a shopper chooses to purchase.[1], [2]
TikTok Shop supplies the earlier commerce background
The new functions build on a platform that already operates TikTok Shop, its dedicated shopping service. That service entered the United States in September 2023. Market researcher eMarketer estimates that US sales through TikTok Shop amounted to approximately 15.8 billion dollars in 2025, representing around 18 per cent of American social commerce. Those estimates describe the earlier service and year, before the new conversational assistant’s announcement.[2]
The October announcement broadens the places within TikTok where shopping can happen. Instead of confining the experience to the existing Shop area, the company is adding product conversations and brand checkout to other app surfaces. Its description of the new tools centers on product information, a conversational purchasing step and payment within the For You interface.[2]
A separate economic-impact study commissioned by TikTok and released the previous week put the number of Americans who bought a product after viewing a TikTok video at 54 million. That figure concerns earlier purchasing behavior.[2]
