Microsoft 365 plans shared Copilot access for family members
Microsoft plans to extend Copilot benefits across Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscriptions, with owners able to manage access for younger members. Separate AI feature limits are to become one usage allowance. The same announcement changes OneDrive from storage allocated to each person to a shared plan total. AI sharing is planned for the coming months, while existing subscribers’ storage transition follows a later renewal schedule.

Copilot benefits are to extend beyond the subscription owner
Microsoft plans to make Copilot benefits shareable with up to five other members of Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans. Copilot is the company’s AI assistant, and the change extends the subscription’s AI access across the family plan. Both The Verge and ZDNet describe the announced sharing change; it is planned for the coming months, rather than access already established for every subscriber.[1], [2]
Owners are to manage younger members’ AI access
Microsoft also plans to let subscription owners manage AI access for younger family members. Separate feature-specific limits are to become a single AI usage allowance. These changes concern both who can use the assistant and how usage is counted within the subscription.[1], [2]
Shared storage keeps members’ accounts and files private
The same announcement changes OneDrive storage from 1 TB per person to 2 TB shared across the plan. Members retain separate accounts and private files, while their storage use counts against the shared total. A Microsoft spokesperson told ZDNet that this storage arrangement applies to new and upgraded subscriptions from October 8.[2]
Existing subscribers move to shared storage after their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027, with advance notification. Microsoft describes transitional storage support for eligible subscribers, whose availability varies. That renewal schedule governs the storage transition; the AI-sharing changes have their own announced rollout over the coming months.[1], [2]
