Antioch AI abuse-material investigation brings 13 charges

An Illinois man faces 13 charges after an investigation into alleged AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Authorities traced online accounts to a home near Antioch and seized electronic devices. Prosecutors are applying a state law covering synthetic depictions of children, while investigators examine the material and try to establish whether real children were used to generate it. The allegations remain unproven.

Lake County files charges after the arrest

Mark Hansen faces 13 charges following an investigation into alleged AI-generated child sexual abuse material near Antioch, a community in the US state of Illinois. Lake County authorities searched his home on 8 October and seized electronic devices for examination.[1], [2]

The inquiry began with reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a US organization handling information about missing children and child exploitation. Authorities say they linked 17 reports to related email addresses and traced subscriber information to Hansen’s home.[1]

Device analysis continues beyond the charged material

Police say Hansen acknowledged owning the accounts and using AI tools to create the material. Officers took two laptops and a mobile phone. Analysts reported finding material in a hidden encrypted folder on one laptop; those statements remain allegations from investigators and prosecutors.[1]

Prosecutors link the online accounts to more than 50,000 images and videos. The filed counts concern eight videos and five images, only a small part of the material under review. Investigators are examining additional images and whether depictions of real children were used to generate new material.[1]

State law covers synthetic depictions

An Illinois law that took effect on 21 March 2025 covers obscene depictions of a purported child, including material generated with AI. Prosecutors say it provides enhanced penalties for depictions of children under 13. This case applies that law while investigators continue identifying the material’s origins.[1]

Hansen appeared in court on 9 October, when Judge Michael Nerheim ordered him held pending a detention hearing. Investigators are trying to identify a child named in the material and establish whether others were affected. Device analysis continues, and a final judgment has not yet established the charges.[1]
