YouTube Music marks songs made with generative AI

YouTube Music has begun rolling out labels that tell listeners when generative AI played a substantial role in a song. The label opens production information on the player page. Partner disclosures and YouTube’s detection tools will identify tracks, with the same approach planned for the main YouTube app.

Labels arrive on the player page

YouTube Music began rolling out labels for songs made with generative artificial intelligence on 14 October. Listeners see the label on the player page and can tap it to learn how the technology contributed to a track. The change covers model-generated composition and vocals, making the production method visible while the song is playing.[1], [2]

Partner disclosures accompany detection tools

YouTube says music partners will provide disclosures and its own detection tools will help identify generated tracks. Partners can distinguish full generation, partial use and no generative AI use. A fully generated song draws its central creative elements from a model. Partial use can combine generated components with a human performance or other human contributions.[1]

The main YouTube app is next

The company plans to extend the labels to the main YouTube app; that expansion was not complete when it announced the rollout. Ordinary audio correction with tools such as AutoTune does not by itself require a generative AI label. Generated music can still earn revenue. The announcement introduces information about production rather than a blanket removal of every labeled track.[1]
