Mistral opens Large 4 weights for self-hosting

Mistral has released the weights of an updated Large 4 model, following its public preview earlier in October. Organizations can host and customize the model themselves. The release follows three more weeks of reinforcement learning and offers three reasoning settings, while a separate commercial licence is required for businesses offering the model as a service.

Weights follow the October preview

Model developer Mistral has published the weights of an updated Mistral Large 4, also known as Le Chonk. The release follows a public preview earlier in October and lets organizations run and customize the model on their own infrastructure. The company says it incorporated feedback and continued reinforcement learning for three weeks after the preview.[1], [2]

Three reasoning settings

Large 4 is a natively multimodal model, trained from scratch on European infrastructure according to Mistral. Its reasoning controls provide low, medium and high settings. Low replaces the earlier non-reasoning setting; the company recommends medium for everyday tasks. High is the default and is intended for more demanding work. These settings are part of the updated release rather than separate model launches.[1]

Service providers need a separate licence

The weights use the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight licence, based on a modified MIT licence. It permits use, modification, fine-tuning and commercialization. Businesses operating Model-as-a-Service offerings must obtain a separate commercial licence from Mistral. The release therefore combines access to downloadable weights with terms that distinguish ordinary model use from providing a model service to other customers.[1]
