Meta opens Muse’s expressive voice avatar to US users

Meta has opened Muse Voice to US users after previewing real-time conversations at Connect in September. An animated character responds with speech, expressions and gestures, and users can change its appearance. The rollout covers mobile, web and Mac; support for glasses and the planned Charm device is due later.

A voice rollout follows the September preview

Meta has made Muse Voice, its voice conversation feature with an animated on-screen character, available to US users. The opening follows a preview at the company’s Connect event in September. Users can talk to Muse on mobile, on the web and on Mac, while the avatar responds with speech, expressions and gestures matched to the conversation.[1], [2]

Users choose the character and voice

The default character is called Jolly, but users can customize an avatar to resemble a person, an animal or another character. Meta’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang demonstrated the experience with a fluffy white dog. Vocal style can also be changed by asking during a conversation or by choosing through settings. Meta says the animated responses are intended to strengthen a user’s connection with the agent.[1]

Glasses and Charm support remain ahead

The technology combines Muse Realtime Avatar with Muse Realtime Voice. Support for AI glasses and the planned Charm device is due later. Charm is intended to show the avatar on a small screen and let its wearer speak to the agent. In the current conversation experience, the character listens and reacts; its animated face does not establish an ability to see the user through a camera.[1]
