Freedom Edge moves ahead while Pyongyang leaves Trump’s overture unanswered
US Pacific Command said it is preparing the 2026 Freedom Edge exercise with South Korea and Japan, even after Trump ordered a smaller bilateral drill to avoid sending Pyongyang a hostile message. Kim Jong-un did not mention Trump’s outreach at a party meeting. Seoul also said the denuclearization goal omitted from recent ministerial readouts remains unchanged, keeping the diplomatic framework in place alongside deterrence.
Giant viruses emerge as persistent residents of aquatic fungi
PLOS Biology reports a newly named giant-virus clade that can persist in aquatic fungi, sometimes integrating into host genomes. Elsewhere, a reconstructed banana-family ancestor starts with 17 chromosomes before later fusions, while exome sequencing found genetic explanations in 12 per cent of a small Estonian group with unexplained premature ovarian insufficiency.
Honda weighs a new US plant after cancelling three electric models
Honda is considering a new US plant to expand its hybrid range. Earlier this year, it cancelled three battery-electric models intended for the country. Hyundai also plans to add 500,000 units of capacity in North America and offer 10 hybrid models in the region. Cox Automotive data put the share of US car shoppers more likely to consider a hybrid amid higher petrol prices at 56 per cent; both carmakers are putting the vehicles at the centre of growth plans through 2030.
Hormuz talks pull Brent below 87 dollars
Talks between Iran and Oman over a temporary Hormuz corridor pulled Brent below 87 dollars a barrel, even as traffic remained far below prewar levels. The previous day's oil decline had lowered the 10-year US Treasury yield to 4.63 per cent while the S&P 500 rose 0.3 per cent. The moves show how quickly expectations for reopening navigation are passing through markets.
Hospital care and parent groups delivered measurable gains in two cluster trials
Across 16 hospitals in four African countries, the ALERT maternity-care package was associated with 22 per cent lower odds of early perinatal death, while the fresh-stillbirth difference was not significant. In wartime Ukraine, participants in the 12-session Hope Groups programme reported 52.7 per cent less violence against children than a waitlist group. That second result relies on self-report and cannot exclude expectancy effects.
India and China hold round 25 of their boundary talks through special representatives
Ajit Doval and Wang Yi used round 25 of the special-representatives talks in Beijing to discuss border calm, delimitation and management mechanisms; no final settlement was announced. In Tehran, Pakistan reported progress in contacts with Iran while Iran promised a response to wider US sanctions. The diplomatic channel advanced, but no agreement was announced.
Intuit’s strong quarter ran into a slower 2027 plan
Intuit beat expectations for fourth-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings per share. But its fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of 23.279 billion dollars to 23.512 billion dollars fell below the market consensus of 23.7 billion dollars. Despite the strong finish, the prospect of growth slowing from 14 per cent to a 9-10 per cent range sent the shares down about 11 per cent after hours.
Jalapeño's inference gain does not yet end OpenAI's chip dependency
OpenAI's first Jalapeño measurements show higher throughput per kilowatt and lower latency than Blackwell on selected models. Small 2026 volumes, no external sales and continued reliance on other suppliers for training limit what those numbers establish today.
Judge halts Ohio citizenship-document rule for voter registration
US District Judge Solomon Oliver Jr temporarily blocked Ohio from demanding citizenship documents from people registering to vote through a motor vehicle bureau. He found that the requirement probably exceeds the minimum information allowed by federal law. The injunction applies before the Oct. 5 registration deadline, while Secretary of State Frank LaRose said he would appeal.
M87* plasma and an X-ray binary reveal new structure across wavelengths
The first spatially resolved spectral-index map of M87* points to optically thick plasma inside the 1.3-millimetre ring and thin plasma outside it. In the first X-ray polarimetry observation of 4U 1822-37, hard-band polarisation exceeded twice the soft-band level. NASA's new 34-metre dish at Goldstone began work by tracking Chandra, expanding the ground network used to maintain links with distant missions.
