Myotis genomes tie a 50-year lifespan to cells that choose death over repair

Brandt's myotis, recaptured 50 years after it was banded, sits at the long-lived end of the Myotis genus in a Nature comparison led from the University of California, Berkeley, while the black myotis lives about 7 years. Wing cells answered chemical DNA damage by opening cell-death pathways rather than repairing. The work is not a human study. A Cornell University team found in fruit flies that infection with Erwinia carotovora killed intestinal cells and pushed stem cells to make replacements, while diet resized existing cells.

OCT was no worse than ultrasound for left main bifurcation stenting

Optical coherence tomography guidance came out no worse than intravascular ultrasound for true distal left main bifurcation lesions. Target lesion failure at 12 months was 14.4 per cent with OCT and 19.6 per cent with ultrasound. That composite covers cardiac death, target lesion-related myocardial infarction and clinically indicated revascularisation, and held when periprocedural infarctions were excluded. A new universal definition now sorts every heart attack into primary, secondary and procedure-related groups, the last covering infarction within 30 days of a cardiac procedure.

OpenAI buys Mac minis for reinforcement learning and computer-use agents

OpenAI is reported to have bought tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studios in recent months for reinforcement learning and for training computer-use agents. The purchases are separate from the cloud graphics-processor clusters the company leases for large-scale model training. Apple's unified memory lets the central processor, graphics processor and neural engine draw on a single shared memory pool, a fit for long-running workloads. Rival labs have bought the same machines; Anthropic is described as renting them through AWS.
