Starship Flight 14 aims for a first Earth orbit
New Scientist, writing on 18 September, said SpaceX's next Starship flight would be the first to circle Earth and the first to release working Starlink V3 satellites, with a window opening at 07:15 CDT on 22 September. India Today's science desk, the next morning, said the company moved that window to 28 September without a public explanation, still describing a first orbital try from Starbase.
Tac1-null mice shed less Citrobacter in the colon
A 18 September 2026 mouse experiment at UC Davis found Tac1-deficient animals shed less Citrobacter rodentium and carried a lower colon bacterial load than wild-type controls, with less tissue damage.
Trump signs the Graham Russia and Iran sanctions law
The BBC reported that President Trump signed a sweeping sanctions bill on Friday aimed at Russia's energy sector and, at Congress's behest, Iran's energy and weapons sectors, named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Al Jazeera, on 19 September, said the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 went to the White House with rare bipartisan support and lets Washington set tariffs of up to 100 percent on major buyers of Russian oil, including China and India.
Two progenitors, not one, build the developing brain
A Nature Neuroscience paper dated 18 September 2026 reports mouse lineage tracing of two gastrulation-stage neural ectoderm progenitors, anterior for forebrain and midbrain and posterior for hindbrain, rather than one common progenitor. Stanford Medicine said Kyle Loh's laboratory found Otx2-linked anterior and Gbx2-linked posterior lineages that do not overlap, and used chromatin differences to grow hindbrain rhombomere 5/6 motor neurons from human pluripotent stem cells. Co-first authors include Carolyn Dundes and Rayyan Jokhai.
Vienna IAEA text called idle in KCNA replies
Kim Yo Jong rejected an IAEA resolution adopted 17 September at the 70th General Conference in Vienna, Yonhap reported from Seoul on 19 September. A foreign ministry spokesperson, in KCNA texts carried by Al Jazeera and Yonhap, said the text has no effect on North Korea's claimed nuclear-weapons-state status, which the ministry said is fixed in supreme law. Kim accused the agency of double standards. Those status claims are Pyongyang's; they are not independently verified here.
Warsh's FOMC lifts the funds rate to 3.75-4 percent
The Federal Reserve 16 September statement, on a 12-0 vote, raised the federal funds target by a quarter point to a 3.75-4 percent range and said inflation remains elevated. A 19 September TIME essay by Roger Ferguson and Maximilian Hippold frames that as Kevin Warsh's third FOMC meeting and the first hike since 2023, after stronger August jobs numbers. Trump attacked the hike on social media. TIME also describes five Warsh task forces and a proposal for six FOMC meetings each year rather than eight.
Washington left the UN Human Rights Council during the Geneva session
DID Press wrote on 18 September that the United States formally ended UN Human Rights Council participation, a day after an independent UN Iran fact-finding mission said there were reasonable grounds to treat two US strikes as war crimes. Ajel, also on that withdrawal, placed the State Department announcement on Thursday evening and quoted the department on anti-American rhetoric.
Washington lifted 2021 Eritrea sanctions citing Red Sea interests
Al Jazeera, citing AFP, AP and Reuters, writes that the State Department said President Donald Trump chose not to renew the 2021 Eritrea measure to advance US regional interests on the Red Sea. A Reuters dispatch carried on Devdiscourse says Treasury's website showed the lift on Friday against the Eritrean Defense Forces and other entities, and quotes information minister Yemane Gebremeskel welcoming the step.
Washington talks a cut in China’s US LNG tariff
People told Reuters the package could be unveiled when Donald Trump receives Xi Jinping in the US capital on 24 September. Beijing put the levy in place in February 2025. Official US data show cargoes of US LNG to China went from 64 ships in 2024 to effectively none in 2025. Neither the White House nor China’s mission in Washington offered comment.
Yale maps shared cancer risk to regions, not the whole genome
Hu, Muheyati, Xu, DeWan and Zhao published a PLOS Genetics observational genetics study on 18 September 2026. SUPERGNOVA local scans across a sixteen-site cancer panel plus a pan-cancer phenotype yielded twenty significant genome-wide pairs and eighty-two regions among sixty-six pairs. Five mutually correlated clusters showed inflammatory enrichment; cross-cancer scores marked five pairs on immune routes. Overlap across the whole genome stays modest. No therapy is claimed.
