Identify the version first
The work is Jolene. The voices on this release belong to Dolly Parton, Bronwen Lewis and Jada Star; its languages are Welsh and English. Released on October 9, the single grew from Lewis’s Welsh translation, shared on social media. Star, Parton’s niece, suggested that she and Lewis record together, and Parton subsequently joined them. That sequence identifies which performance sits under the familiar title. The original Jolene dates from 1973; this year’s three-singer version has its own credits. Spotify’s display of Irish lyrics attached the wrong language to that particular recording.[1]
The parts were recorded in two places: Lewis and Star in the UK, Parton in Nashville. Their appearance on one release gives no reason to assume that all three singers shared a studio. Those details do not establish the accompaniment, key or placement of the voices. The useful certainty is narrower: the singers, languages and separate recording locations are identified. Those particulars establish the version a listener is being offered. Keeping them distinct when comparing releases avoids treating every performance under a famous title as the same rendition.[1]
The removed text and the missing replacement
Spotify removed the incorrect lyrics after questions from the BBC. Its October 25 report says the company did not answer when the text had appeared or when correct words would be supplied. The completed action is therefore the removal. The report does not establish that Welsh lyrics have replaced the Irish text, and no replacement audio recording was announced. The single’s release on October 9 and the intervention in its lyrics display are distinct actions at different times. Separating changes to the music from changes to its accompanying text gives a listener a way to compare subsequent presentations of this version.[1]
The distinction a listener can follow here is between the language being sung and the language being read. Someone following the Welsh-English version was offered Irish text alongside it. Removing that text ends the reported mismatch without establishing any change to the translation or vocal performance. Even under the unchanged title Jolene, the version’s language and its accompanying lyrics need separate identification. The practical task is to keep the three singers’ credits attached to words in the appropriate language. The remaining gap is equally specific: Spotify has not said when the correct lyrics will be displayed.[1]
