JioHotstar agreement follows the cinema window

Ramayana: Part One, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has secured a digital release on Indian streaming platform JioHotstar after its theatrical run. JioHotstar and producer Prime Focus Studios agreed a separate-payment offering for the film.[1], [2]

The companies described the arrangement as JioHotstar’s first pay-per-view offering of this kind. No precise digital launch date was announced. Producer Namit Malhotra, founder and chief executive of visual-effects company DNEG, said India’s cinema infrastructure could not reach everyone who wanted to see the epic. He presented the partnership as a way of extending access after cinemas.[1]

Valmiki’s epic becomes a two-part live-action film

Shridhar Raghavan adapted Valmiki’s epic for a two-part live-action production. Ranbir Kapoor plays the exiled prince Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita and Yash plays Ravana, whose abduction of Sita sets the conflict in motion. Sunny Deol appears as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Prime Focus Studios is producing with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.[1]

Worldwide cinema opening is set for 5 November

The worldwide cinema opening is scheduled for 5 November, coinciding with Diwali. Sony Pictures Entertainment handles global distribution, while Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions distributes in India. Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are composing the music. Production design is by Ravi Bansal and Ramsey Avery, with Terry Notary and Guy Norris overseeing the action. The film was designed for Imax and other large cinema formats.[1]
