Molodist begins its anniversary programme in Kyiv
The 55th Molodist Film Festival opened on 24 October in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. The programme runs through 1 November and brings together Ukrainian and international films.[1], [2]
Student films, short films and debut features have separate competitions, alongside a documentary competition. Fiction, documentary and animation are represented. Screenings take place at venues including Zhovten cinema and the House of Cinema. The festival awards the Scythian Deer statuette.[1]
Oleh Sentsov chairs the international jury
Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov chairs the international jury, which assesses student films, shorts and first features to choose the Grand Prix winner. European Film Academy chief executive Matthijs Wouter Knol, filmmakers Mahnaz Mohammadi and Yevhen Lavrenchuk, and critic Anita Uzulniece join him. The national competition jury comprises Viacheslav Turyanytsia, Polish programmer Radek Lipka and French-British programmer Xavier Henry-Rashid.[1]
A student-film festival grows beyond its first programme
Molodist began in 1970, when a two-day event screened 33 student shorts from the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts named after Ivan Karpenko-Kary. Vadym Chubasov and Viktor Ivchenko founded it. This year’s noncompetitive strands include Festival of Festivals, featuring films from other festivals, alongside Forma, Century of Greats and Midnight Screening.[1]
