The board extends its chief administrator’s term

SAG-AFTRA, the US union representing film, television, broadcast and recording performers, extended Duncan Crabtree-Ireland’s employment contract and added chief executive officer to his existing national executive director title.[1], [2]

The national board voted on 24 October, with 98.34 per cent of the weighted vote supporting the extension. His term now ends on 20 June 2032, rather than in 2028 under the previous agreement. The extension adds four years.[1]

Crabtree-Ireland led strike negotiations

Crabtree-Ireland became the union’s top administrator in 2021, after serving as general counsel and chief operating officer. He played a central role in the 2023 actors’ strike and negotiations with studios. His work has included artificial intelligence agreements addressing permission and compensation when performers’ likenesses are used. Union president Sean Astin supported the extension on leadership-stability grounds.[1]

The administrative term runs beyond studio talks

The existing major studio collective agreement is due to expire in June 2030, before the end of Crabtree-Ireland’s extended administrative term. The union emphasised leadership continuity during technological and structural changes in the industry. Financial terms of the new employment arrangement were not disclosed. His reported 1.1 million dollar compensation in the latest fiscal year concerns that earlier period, rather than the new contract’s price.[1]
