A television painting heads to Munich

Mountain Splendor, an oil landscape Bob Ross painted on camera in 1986, is set for Ketterer Kunst’s December 5 auction in Munich. The German auction house estimates the work at forty to sixty thousand euros. American Public Television, a distributor serving US public broadcasters, is offering the painting through a charity initiative supporting those stations.[1], [2]

The work survives from a filmed lesson

Ross created the scene for the eighth episode of The Joy of Painting’s seventh season. He usually made separate versions of a composition for preparation, filming and a book; the Munich work is the one painted during the programme. Ketterer Kunst describes its condition as exceptionally good after decades in storage. The Joy of Painting ran for 403 episodes between 1983 and 1994.[1]

Five German cities host the preview

The preview itinerary runs from November 8 to December 4 through Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin and Munich. Ketterer Kunst describes the sale as Germany’s first auction of an original Ross painting. The artist’s programme has been shown on German television since 2001. Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc, leads the charitable auction initiative.[1]
