Wayne Coyne traces how The Teardrop Throbs songs took shape

Wayne Coyne has described the writing and rearrangement behind the Flaming Lips’ forthcoming The Teardrop Throbs. Songs emerged from a film melody, a composition split into separate pieces and orchestration removed from another recording. The thirteen-track album is due in January on Third Man Records, with God Will Control the Werewolves released alongside its announcement.

A film melody enters Throb

Wayne Coyne, singer of psychedelic rock band the Flaming Lips, has described how songs on The Teardrop Throbs developed. The thirteen-track album is due through the label Third Man Records on January 22, 2027. Coyne identifies Pretty Fly, a melody from the film The Night of the Hunter, as a starting point for Throb. A shortened passage survives in the track, played on slide guitar by Adam Judd Slaughter.[1]

One continuous composition becomes two pieces

Hooray and At the End of the Day originally formed part of a continuous composition before being separated. Coyne says At the End of the Day began with his guitar playing and his wife Katy singing the title phrase. Its later arrangement became instrumental after the narrative was removed. Elsewhere, the ending of You See You in Me expanded around slide guitars and distorted strings; Coyne and producer Dave Fridmann cut several minutes and added a closing phrase.[1]

Orchestration becomes the closing instrumental

Now I Understand grew out of orchestration placed behind another song. Coyne’s account describes removing that recording’s vocal, drums, guitar and song structure to create the closing instrumental. Every Teardrop Cried took the opposite route, expanding from a single-line interlude into a song with a verse.[1]

The album, the band’s first new studio collection since American Head, was announced with the single God Will Control the Werewolves.[1], [2]
