David Bowie’s 1978 concert footage becomes Stage for Berlin arena premiere

The David Bowie estate and filmmaker Brett Morgen have announced Stage, an arena presentation built around footage of Bowie’s 1978 Earls Court concerts. Its world premiere is scheduled for Berlin in February 2027, during the Berlin Film Festival. The production combines reworked film, multiple screens, lighting and a new audio mix around the original recorded performance.

Berlin will host the Stage premiere

Stage, a new arena production based on David Bowie’s recorded concerts, will premiere at Berlin’s Uber Arena on February 14, 2027. The Bowie estate, entertainment producer Wonderworld and filmmaker Brett Morgen announced the project in association with the 77th Berlin Film Festival. Its core is footage of Bowie’s 1978 Isolar II concerts at Earls Court in London, captured on 35 mm film.[1], [2]

Morgen reworks the original concert film

Morgen has reconfigured the footage through editing, colour work and hand painting. The production uses long, uninterrupted takes within a multi-screen presentation. Lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe is preparing the lighting, and sound mixer Paul Massey is preparing the new audio mix. The makers describe transparent displays and surround sound as part of the environment around the original recorded performance. The concert shown was recorded in 1978.[1]

The 1978 band and repertoire return on screen

The filmed band includes lead guitarist Adrian Belew, rhythm guitarist and musical director Carlos Alomar, bassist George Murray and drummer Dennis Davis. Roger Powell plays keyboards, Sean Mayes piano and Simon House electric violin. Announced songs include Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel, Suffragette City, Fame, The Jean Genie and Heroes, alongside material from Low and Heroes. Discussions between Morgen and the estate began in 2018; Wonderworld founder Rob Hallett joined in 2024.[1]
